Leaving

Why don't women leave an abusive relationship?

  • They have lowered your self-esteem, self-worth and confidence, they tell you that you’ll never cope on your own.
  • They tell you that you are breaking the family apart, they say that kids need two parents.
  • They threaten suicide.
  • They tell you that if you leave, they will find out where you live, you’ll never be free of them, you’ll always be looking over your shoulder.
  • They threaten to hurt the children.
  • You’ve lost touch with your family and aren’t allowed to have any friends. You’ve moved miles away from everyone you know and have no support network around you.
  • They control all the finances and restrict your money, you may even have to ask for money. How can you leave with no access to money?
  • They threaten to tell Social Services you’re a bad mother. They say the children will be taken into care and you’ll never see them again.
  • Nobody else believes they are abusive because outside the house they are the perfect partner.
  • They threaten to kill you and you believe them.

The most dangerous time for a woman in an abusive relationship is when she leaves or talks about leaving.

Would you have the courage?
