Abusers can use the internet in different ways to harass or stalk a partner or ex-partner. They might do this by sending abusive materials, reading your email, logging on as you and pretending to be you, or even buying items over the internet from your account.

If you are in a controlling relationship, the only safe way to use the internet or email is by going to a local library, a friend’s house, or using it at work. If you use a computer or tablet that can be accessed by the perpetrator, there will always be a risk.

E-mail: If an abuser has access to your email account, they may be able to read your incoming and outgoing mail. If you think your account is not secure, change the password to one that nobody will be able to guess. Do not write passwords down or make them too obvious, ie date of birth, pet’s name.

If anyone sends you threatening or harassing e-mail messages, (this includes texts and voice mail) they may be kept and saved as evidence of abuse. The messages may constitute an offence.

When you delete an email it will go into your Deleted Items folder and can be retrieved. Go into Deleted Items and delete again to remove it completely.

History / cache file: If an abuser knows how to read your computer’s history or cache file (automatically saved web pages and graphics), they may be able to see information you have viewed recently on the internet.

Open CONTROL PANEL, then INTERNET OPTIONS, click on DELETE FILES, and OK. Click on CLEAR HISTORY and then

AUTOCOMPLETE. When the option box appears click CLEAR FORMS.
